You may have seen part 1 of my Top 10 Fragrances of 2014, showing numbers 10-6. Here's the second part, which brings you the top 5 scents I've enjoyed from last year. All facts courtesy of my number 1 fragrance website, Fragrantica, my go to when considering any scent.
Number 5
Marc Jacobs Daisy
The floral fruity scent was launched in 2007, created by Alberto Morillas. It contains fruity top notes of violet leaf, pink grapefruit and strawberry, a heart of elegant gardenia, jasmine and violet and a sultry base of white woods, vanilla and musk.
This is such a popular scent but I always ummed and ahhed about getting it. I got a sample and ended up really liking it. The only word to describe it is...nice, it's just a nice scent. The violet in Daisy is undeniable and easily recognisable. But what it also is, is uplifting and happy. It works best in the spring and summer, but I like to spritz it anytime I'm feeling blue. I've come to the end of my sample now and think I will purchase a full size bottle of Daisy.
Number 4
Diptyque Philosykos
This was one of those fragrances that was seriously hyped up in the blogosphere, and with good right too! Philosykos was created by Olivia Giacobetti (GENIUS!) in 1996. I can't believe this is almost 20 years old, it smells so current and fresh! This is stuff dreams are made of. It was love from the word go with the sample I managed to snap up from eBay and I will without a doubt be buying a full size bottle.
Philosykos has green and fruity top notes of fig and fig leaf, green mid notes balanced with creamy coconut and a woody base of cedar and fig tree. This is a unisex fragrance but I'd say it smells more on the feminine side. It's not an overly sweet fragrance though, simply uplifted with the ripe juicy fig top notes. Fig is by far my favourite note, and Diptyque have smashed the ball out of the park with this one.
Number 3
Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely
Lovely is the first fragrance from Miss Carrie Bradshaw, aka Sarah Jessica Parker. She wanted to create something sexy and classy, a nod to classic fragrances. Lovely was created by noses Laurent Le Guernec and Clement Gavarry, in 2005, with SJP as creative director. This is perhaps the finest celebrity fragrance, a standout in a market of overly sweet, gourmand orientals all of which lack the sophistication of Lovely. It has top notes of dreamy lavender, and sharp mandarin, bergamot and apple martini, a nod to glamorous New York City nights. It races into an exotic heart of orchid and pepper and mellows down into a musky base including cedar and amber.
Lovely is my cosy perfume. With the notes of lavender, it aids slumber perfectly. I like nothing better than to spritz this on, pop on a classic episode of Sex and the City and sink into fresh, crisp sheets (and imagine I was Carrie Bradshaw). I used this every night when I first got it, and the scent always reminds me of home.
Number 2
M&S Autograph Inspire
Inspire is a floral scent, which opens with notes of pretty freesia and pepper. There is such a freshness to these top notes, like fresh flowers. It moves into a beautiful heart of heliotrope, jasmine, hibiscus and rose and has a cedar and sandalwood base. I've used this fragrance for years. It smells almost vanillary and neutral and is the perfect inoffensive work scent. It's also great for spritzing on when I'm around the house and it is such a bargain.
Number 1
Marc Jacobs Oh, Lola!
Oh, Lola! launched in 2011 as the little sister to the existing Lola fragrance. It was created by Ann Gottlieb to include top notes of strawberry, raspberry and pear, an uplifting heart of peony, magnolia, and cyclamen and a creamy heart of vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood.
This is such an unexpected love. I got a sample of this in April and as much as I thought the scent was pretty, it wasn't memorable and just didn't last. However I grabbed it to pop in my clutch for the Summer Ball back in June and literally fell in love! I bought a bottle and it has been my go to for the rest of 2014! It now reminds me of sunnier times and my holiday to Greece.
I'm going to end this post with a few fragrances I'm looking forward to trying in 2015. These include My Burberry, Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt, Tom Ford Velvet Orchid and Paco Rabanne Lady Million Eau My Gold!
