January Empties

20 January 2016

By now, I think we all know how much I love empties posts, so I won't spend 500 words rabbiting on about it like I usually do. Next month's empties will see my favourite post have a bit of a revamp. I'll be separating out skincare, beauty and random empties into different posts instead of being a weird mismatch of products. But for this post, we're sticking to the standard formula. As long as it's in my trash, you know the drill...

BEAUTY

Out of everything, I find it the most exciting of to come to the end of a makeup product. It's a bit of a rare occasion around these parts as I rarely find something I love enough to completely finish. I actually discovered the Benefit Porefessional Primer (£24.50) long ago via this mini. I instantly loved it and purchased a full size (which incidentally, I think I have also finished), so the mini went into my travel makeup kit. Since then, I have discovered The Body Shop Instablur Primer, which is currently taking the top spot, so I wont repurchase the Porefessional. I do however think it is a good silicone-based primer, and comes a close second. The Porefessional is such a sentimental product of mine, as the review became my first ever post on this blog, almost two years ago.

This Barry M Nail Paint  (£2.99) in Coral used to be my shade of the summer. But the time has come and it has entered gloopsville. BarryM seem to be phasing out their standard line of nail polishes in favour of the likes of the Gelly Hi-shine and Speedy Quick Dry, both of which completely trump the original formula.

BATH & BODY

Back in the summer, I went along to a Lush event (read all about it here). One of the new products released that season was the Frozen Bath Bomb* (£3.95), which I was delighted to find in the goodie bag. This has a beautiful grapefruit and neroli scent, and turns the water an amazing shade of blue with oodles of silver glitter, leaving you feeling like a mermaid. I usually favour bubble bars over bath bombs as I think they are better value, but this one I loved. I have repurchased, and will repurchase again.

A product that is hugely unnecessary, but something I managed to get into in a big way is the foot pack. Pre-soaked ugly plastic booties, filled with a gloriously cooling, nourishing lotion soften and revive tired feet. Whilst being more hydrating, I found the musky scent of the Macademia Oil Extract Foot Pack irritating, so I'm a Tea Tree gal all the way. I usually pick these up from a discount store like Savers or B&M for less than £1.

SKINCARE

I find skincare the easiest products to finish, especially when a lot of them are sample sizes and sachets. I got a mini of the Aromatherapy Associates Renewing Rose Cleanser* (full size £26) free with a magazine alongside a moisturiser and a mask.  It smelt nice but I didn't enjoy it as much as Cleanse & Polish. For the price of the full size, I definitely wasn't wowed.

Garnier Micellar Water (£4.99) is a cleanser I struggled to get into, but once I did, I really started to enjoy it. I've been using it pre-cleanse to get rid of the majority of my makeup, and I have seen it finally slip nicely into my nightly routine. I have already repurchased a mini bottle, of which I have almost finished. I can see holy grail status on the horizon.

From cleanser onto the next step, toner. The first one I ever discovered was the Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic (from £6 for 50ml). I really fell for its hydrating, soothing formula, and its rose-scented geranium fragrance really became a ritual I enjoyed. To this day I haven't found a toner that compares, so a repurchase will be on the cards very soon.

I got the REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask (full size £32) in a Birchbox last year, and really enjoyed using it. It is a joy to use as the ginger/honey/lemon scent is perfect when you are feeling under the weather, and your skin needs a brightening boost. I have repurchased the full size, although I don't use it as much as I thought I would.

A mask I adored last year was the 7th Heaven Chocolate Mask. With that in mind, I decided to try a few of the Superdrug mask sachets. The first I tried was the De-stressing Mud Mask (99p). I didn't like the scent much, as I found it overpowering rather than relaxing, and I don't think it did much for my skin. I didn't have much luck with their Sugar & Spice Self-Heating Mask (99p) as it was really runny and messy, so I probably wouldn't buy any of the Superdrug masks in the future.

CANDLES

Finally we move on to candles. With the amount of scents I try, I struggle to finish even a votive or tart. One I didn't really enjoy that much at first was the woody scent of Mountain Lodge from Yankee Candle. Last autumn, I really got into the scent, as you will know if you read my 2015 in Candles post. Amber Moon (£1.80) is another beautiful scent; this time a warm, feminine perfume. It's a favourite for the bedroom as it is subtle and pretty, and I have already bought another votive.

So that concludes another empties. As I mentioned earlier, the humble empties post will be having a makeover, and the next one you will see with be exclusively skincare.

What have you finished up lately?
