Chloé Love Story Eau de Parfum Review Debenhams

With the soaring popularity of their Drew and Faye bags, Chloé is the luxury brand of the moment. Having been a favourite of mine in the fragrance department for a number of years, I'm a real fan of their signature line of perfumes. Chloé Eau de Parfum is particularly nostalgic for me, with it's heady rose elixir conjuring up the magic of shopping at department stores at Christmas time as a teen. Roses de Chloe is another favourite, lighter and more suitable for summer wear. I'm yet to try L'eau de Chloe, their more springtime appropriate scent as it lacks that recognisable warm floral Chloé base. To me, a Chloé scent should exude femininity and sum up the magic and romance of Paris, and Love Story does exactly that...

Chloé Love Story* (from £47 for 30ml) was released in September 2014 with a campaign fronted by bae my long-time girl crush, Clémence Poésy. The bottle is beautifully designed, and finished elegantly in gold. It also greatly pleases me that the rear of the bottle is of the same fluted glass as the Chloé signature fragrances. The design is representative of a padlock, inspired by the "love locks" on the Pont des Arts (which have sadly been removed due to fears of the bridge collapsing). Love Story is the expression of a free woman, which also ties into the padlock theme.

"A night in Paris. Sparkling lights and music.
A crowd. And her."

AT A GLANCE

Top Notes

Neroli, bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, pear

Heart

Orange blossom, stephanotis, rose, blackcurrant, peach

Base

Musk, cedar, cashmirwood, patchouli

THE LOVE STORY EXPERIENCE

The scent, which was created by Anne Flipo, contains vibrant citrus top notes, with bergamot, grapefruit and lemon, as well as pear and a heady hint of neroli. The opening gives the scent a freshness that the original Chloe EDP lacks, and makes it perfect for spring. Neroli and orange blossom form the basis of the whole scent, as the two similar notes hide behind other notes and emerge at various intervals, surprising you with their reappearance.

At the heart of the scent lie the florals. There is a romantic combination of orange blossom, rose and stephanotis, which is more commonly known as Madagascan Jasmine and is commonly used in wedding bouquets. Also in the heart are fruity notes of blackcurrant and peach. The peach adds warmth and softness, and blends the orange blossom and rose together seamlessly.

Moving through to the base, there are some traditionally heavy notes: musk, patchouli and woods in the form of cashmirwood and cedar. These don't make the scent heavy at all, rather intensifying and prolonging the wear time, leaving behind an addictive floral skin scent.

MY EXPERIENCE

I find the opening to be sharp, with the grapefruit and other citrus fruits being prominent. After a couple of minutes, the fragrance settles and the citrus mellows to have a certain fizzy quality as the florals begin to come through. Stephanotis is the first floral to appear, followed by orange blossom, and finally the sweetest floral, rose makes an appearance. The rose is a subtle yet nostalgic nod towards my much loved Chloé EDP. The rose and orange blossom mix and I find this combination reminiscent of a peony scent (as mentioned in my February Favourites). The scent gets warmer and sweeter the closer it gets to the base notes of musk, woods and patchouli, although Love Story manages to remain a delicate, feminine scent.

Love Story is more complex than I expected. I wore it a few times before I properly sat down to collect my thoughts about it, although I found it tricky to pick out the notes and transitions. There is no denying that this is a romantic scent, but this is definitely a pretty daytime scent rather than something I'd spritz on to seduce (seduction, who am I kidding?), as suggested by the advert. Instead, it has become my go-to for when I want a sophisticated spring time scent, and it's one I'll be keeping in the stash for any future trips to Paris.
