It's no secret that my favourite note in any kind of fragrance, be it personal or home, is fig. There's just something about it that is so intriguing to my nose. Price's Candles got in touch and asked whether I'd like to choose a candle to review, and my ears sure pricked up when I saw they had not one but three fig scents to choose from! I chose the Fig & Anise over the Honey & Fig (both from the signature range) as it sounded more fresh which is the kind of fig that I love. I had told the guys at Price's that fig was my favourite note, and they had also thrown in a Fresh Fig small tin, which was really nice of them. I shall have to get the Honey & Fig to complete the set!
I was keen to try out the brand as I recognised them from their Fresh Air candles, that I had seen being sold in John Lewis. I had no idea they had such an extensive range of scented candles, but when I took a look at their website, I was pleasantly surprised. Price's hold a Royal Warrant for Her Majesty The Queen, and that paired with over 180 years of experience, I knew I was in for a quality candle.
Price's Patent Candles Ltd. established in 1830, and was the largest candle company in the world by the turn of the century as they dominated the nightlight market. It's so weird thinking of a time without proper lighting! Nowadays, the candle market is focused primarily on aesthetics and scent, rather than it being the essential every day item as it was back in the 1800s. Price's have had to up their game dramatically, and has developed a range of perfumed and essential oil candles and reed diffusers.
The Medium Signature Fig & Anise Jar* (£10) comes in a contemporary curved glass jar, with a reflective silver lid. One of my favourite things is the fact that the label is still a nod towards the brand's heritage, with it's traditional branding and Royal stamp of approval, modernised with a pastel touch.
Fig & Anise contains "uplifting top notes of juicy fig, supported by the comforting warmth of anise". I'm not the hugest fan of licourice scents so I was a little worried that the anise would be overpowering but that is not the case at all. It is an interesting scent, with a subtle honeyed sweetness. It isn't overly fresh or fruity, but it is a well blended and sophisticated scent that is perfect for fragrancing any room in the house without being heady or overpowering.
The medium size is said to have a burn time of approximately 45 hours which is fab for just £10. This one seemed very slow to burn down. Sometimes you can burn a soy wax candle once and you are already quite a way down the candle. The only downside to being a slow burner is the fact that you are at risk of tunnelling, so you will have to burn the candle for a good few hours at a time. The scent isn't overly strong when burning, I would have liked it to be a tad stronger, but it does add a subtle warming sweetness to the room.
The Fresh Fig Scented Tin* (£4) comes in a really sweet, travel friendly plastic tin (although the one shown on the website is slightly different) with a metal lid with a really cute fig design. There isn't a scent description for this one on the website, but it smells a lot fruitier than Fig & Anise. It has quite a sweet, exotic scent, with an element of tropical coconut. This one also has a stronger scent than Fig & Anise. For the teeny size, I was surprised to see that you could get 25 hours of burn time. The size makes it brilliant for travelling if you like to take something away with you to make your room smell like home, and it would make a lovely gift whilst still being affordable.
The Fresh Fig tin really surprised me, and ended up being my favourite of the two, although I did love the scent of the Fig & Anise, it didn't quite come through as well when lit. I love the designs of the signature range as they will fit into any room and go with any decor style. The travel size candles also make brilliant gifts and are great to try a scent before committing to a larger jar. There are so many fab sounding scents in a range of styles to suit all budgets. As a whole, I think the products are really good prices, especially for such a heritage brand. I'm particularly interested in trying their Fresh Air odor neutralising range next as living in a semi-detached house, we pick up cigarette smells from next door, and we're desperate for something to get rid of it!
