£140 worth of products that didn't work for me...

Products I Regret Buying Disappointing Products Jeffree Star Cosmetics Milani, Hourglass NARS Illamasqua

It's been a while since I've written a post like this, and I usually just chat about fails when I'm doing my seasonal declutter videos. It's inevitable that when you're on the quest to find your holy grail products, there are going to be a few that don't work out the way you hoped. Usually that's no big deal, but when the products are high-end, like 4 of the 5 in this post, it can be pretty heart-breaking. Although these items didn't work for me, I'm well aware that we all have different skin-types and tones, so these might still end up working for you, and don't be offended if some of these are your favourites. If you have any tips on how to get the best out of them, do let me know!

NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint (£30) | After being disappointed in NARS Sheer Glow (demo-ed in my Full Face of Products I Hate), I was convinced the Velvet Matte Skin Tint would be more suited to me, so I picked it up in the lightest shade Terre-Neuve. I gave my first impressions in my full face of NARS video, and unfortunately my feelings haven't changed. I just find it so difficult to blend, whether I use a brush, beauty blender or my fingers and it doesn't seem to sit right on my skin. I've only worn it a few times and I've never been able to make it work sadly!

Illamasqua Beyond Highlighter in OMG (£34) | I picked this up on a bit of whim after I swatched it in the Carnaby St Store, and initially I thought it was pretty. I wore it a bit when I first got it. but I never found it the most intense highlighter when applied with a fan brush. It was a bit more intense when applied with my Morphe M510 brush, and with a bit of setting spray, but as the colour builds up I don't find it that flattering. The gold shade is quite yellow and it doesn't seem to sit right on my rosy skin. For the price, it just didn't wow me, and it soon got pushed out of my daily rotation.

Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso (£10) | Luckily this one wasn't quite as pricey as the rest of the products in this post, but it was still extremely hyped. It was touted as a NARS Orgasm dupe, and everyone seemed to love it. I ordered it online before Milani became more readily available in the UK and never really fell in love with it. The baked formula is quite shimmery, and the shade is more orangey, compared to the peachy pink I was expecting. It's not awful, but the tone of it looks a bit off on me, and I definitely think it would suit someone with a warmer undertone.

Jeffree Star Cosmetics X Manny MUA Skin Frost in Eclipse (£25.50) | This is one that I am a bit gutted about because the brand's liquid lipsticks are my Holy Grails, and this was my first Skin Frost. I had heard everyone say Jeffree's highlighter formula is incredible, and I had no reason to think this one would be any different. I wasn't overly wowed with the formula when I did my first impressions video although I really like the icy peach shade as it is perfect for my skin tone. I find that it doesn't feel creamy in the pan as I had expected it to, the shimmer is quite chunky, and I found it hard to build it up to that BAM glazed-donut look. However, I *think* I might have cracked it by scraping off the top layer - I'll keep you updated on that one. I do still plan on picking up one of the original Skin Frosts, as everyone says they're so amazing, and I think Ice Cold will be perfect for my pale skin. Fingers crossed that one works better!

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light (£40) | This is one that I had lusted after for what felt like years. I had even tried the Makeup Revolution dupe in their Radiant Lights Palette, and was sure that I would get lots of use out of the Hourglass. I thought it was okay at first, if a little underwhelming, but as time went on I began to notice it oxidising really badly on my skin, making me look orange! I genuinely think the Makeup Revolution one is better, and it really adds a gorgeous soft-focus glow to the skin. I'll be sticking to that one in the future!

  1. I've seen a lot of people being disappointed by the Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint, but the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light is usually really well loved, so thank you for sharing your honest thoughts about it! Lovely post :)

  2. I totally agree with what you said about the Jeffree Star Skin Frost. I have Ice Cold and Peach Goddess and was super impressed but I rarely find myself using Eclipse - it feels dry and I find it quite difficult to blend. x
